Graduiertenkolleg 1131 Visualization of Large and Unstructured Data Sets. Applications in Geospatial Planning, Modeling, and Engineering

The primary research goal of this IRTG is the enhancement of scientific and information visualization techniques applied to large and unstructured data sets. Every visualization task is based on application data. For providing these data, we integrate applications from the domain "Geospatial Planning, Modeling, and Engineering", which produce these huge amounts of unstructured data that are of interest for the planned visualization tasks. This integration is necessary to allow a deeper understanding of the provided data due to the sharing of knowledge through the projects.
Up to now, visualization of large and structured or small and unstructured data sets is the state of the art. Large and unstructured data sets are still not very well understood, especially with respect to visualization. In order to address these questions, we define a set of projects aiming at solving these problems. In detail, we are handling visualization problems, with respect to modeling, feature detection, and comparison tasks. For doing this, both the extension of existing techniques and the development of new ones are intended.
In the application areas there is an increasing need to handle huge amounts of unstructured data. For example, nowadays environmental monitoring systems are capable of measuring data at a very high resolution and in a large number of frequency bands. On the other hand, in scaled-down earthquake laboratory experiments within a centrifuge improved sensor technology permits the measurement of an increased number of parameters at higher sampling rates. Finally, earthquake simulations produce more and more data because of more elaborate simulation techniques. All these improvements in measurement technology lead to large, high-dimensional data sets. Visualizing these data is very useful to get new insights into the problems involved.

In the application areas huge amounts of data are produced either by data from field measurements like environmental observation stations, from experiments and from simulation. The data is then visualized based on improved or newly developed visualization techniques like volume modeling, feature detection and visualization, etc.
The research objectives described above are backed by parallel analyses conducted in our partner country, the U.S. In [1] the needs for further research in the area of visualization as seen by the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) are described.

The project aims at obtaining results and products for public structures and bodies to let them know and manage their territory, by offering not only technical solutions but also procedures, standards and certification systems. Results are fruit of researches involving innovative aspects of Geomatics, i.e. GNSS, Laser Scanning, remote sensing, GIS.
Objectives of the projects are: interoperability of reference systems; tsting of low cost systems for building monitoring through a network of GPS/GNSS receivers.

LETS 2050 Governing transitions towards Low-Carbon Energy and Transport Systems for 2050

The core mission of the LETS research program is to identify, explore and suggest ways that Sweden can implement low-carbon energy and transport systems for 2050, in order to reach the ambitious climate policy objectives suggested by the 2°C target.

Hence, the overarching research question is:
What societal transitions are implied by low-carbon futures and how can thesetransitions be governed and implemented to meet challenging climate policy objectives?

LETS will combine scientific excellence with close user interaction to ensure relevance and efficient dissemination of knowledge and results among key stakeholders. The objective is to produce new knowledge, but also to synthesize and interpret existing knowledge for more informed choices by decision makers, planners and other stakeholders.

Low-carbon futures necessitate shifts to carbon-free energy carriers produced in low-carbon conversion processes and changes in consumption behavior. When accommodating such shifts, existing political and administrative regimes are challenged by the need for climate policy integration across policy domains, dynamic consistency, new planning tools and processes, ceding power to the appropriate level, etc.

Output
The outputs from LETS will range from high-level research based policy advice to tools and guidelines for the “street level” implementing agencies and other administrative bodies. The research team brings together key disciplines from social sciences, economics and engineering (i.e. energy and transport system studies).

The central aim of this project is to map quantitative measures of vulnerability to climate change at municipality scale across Finland. Vulnerability is defined as the degree to which a system is susceptible to, or unable to cope with, adverse effects of climate change. It can be characterised as a function of the exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity of a system to climate change.
