Die Umweltinformatik wird hier in umfassendem Sinne als integratives Fach aus Bio-, Öko-, Geoinformatik und Wissenschaftliches Rechnen verstanden, die jede für sich Objekte, Strukturen, regulatorische Netzwerke, Prozesse (Signale, Stoff- und Informationsflüsse) u.ä. auf verschiedenen Skalen- und Integrationsniveaus mit Informatikwerkzeugen studieren und modellieren. Unter dem Dach der Umweltinformatik sollte der Wissenstransfer und die systemorientierte Integration über Skalenstufen der raumbezogenen Bio-, Öko- und Umweltsysteme mittels moderner Informatik Methoden und Technologien gefördert und verbessert werden. Durch die Etablierung des Master- und Promotionsprogramms in Umweltinformatik, eingebettet in GAUSS und in die Forschungslandschaft Göttingen, wird auch diesem wichtigen Integrationsansatz auf Systemebene durch eine effiziente akademische und bildungsbezogene Maßnahme Rechnung getragen. Die exzellente biologische, ökosystemare, umweltbezogene und mathematische Forschung in Göttingen erfordert die Etablierung eines entsprechenden integrativen Master- und Promotionsprogramms in Umweltinformatik, aus dem wichtige innovative wissenschaftliche Impulse und Beiträge erwartet werden.

Unter der Federführung der Fakultät für Mathematik und Informatik und unter Beteiligung der Fakultäten für Forstwissenschaften und Waldökologie, für Biologie und für Geowissenschaften und Geographie, ist das Programm für Umweltinformatik (PEI) Bestandteil der "Georg-August University School of Science", Acronym: GAUSS und der im Aufbau befindlichen "Göttingen Graduate School of Terrestical Ecosystems", Acronym GGTE.

The Iberian lynx is the most threatened carnivorous mammal in Europe. This medium-sized feline (8-14 kg) lives in areas characterised by a mixture of dense woodland, Mediterranean scrub and pasture, especially areas with an abundance of rabbits and where interference from humans is minimal. Up to the XIXth century, the species could be found in all the regions of Spain and Portugal. Since then, and particularly in the last decades of the XXth century, its population and distribution area have suffered an alarming decline mainly due to rabbit epidemics and loss of habitat. At present, the population is barely 100 individuals in only two unconnected regions of Andalucia, Andújar-Cardeña and Doñana. This catastrophic trend was partially reversed by a former LIFE project (LIFE 02/E/8609) that succeeded in stabilising the situation by maintaining collaboration with landowners and hunters, improving habitat conditions and managing rabbit populations. A wide and massive awareness raising campaign was also carried out. However, the need for additional efforts was apparent. Many deaths were occurring as a result of road accidents.

The final goal is to upgrade the production of energy from energy crops biomass from its present situation to a precommercial stage, by defining and creating the conditions that can promote the sustainable market of this alternative. Therefore the Project work programme intends to co-ordinate the industrial and RTD activities in order to try to achieve the national energy objectives with energy crops biomass.

Sizeable polymer plants “Orion Global PET” and Joint Stock Company “Neo Group” are operating in Lithuania along with the lubricant manufacturer “SCT Lubricants”, all being interested in local suppliers. As raw materials in plastics and lubricants, various esters, manufactured by traditional chemical methods, are often used. Manufacture of biodiesel, which is also an ester, is growing in Lithuania. Since it is subsidized by government, it is important to diversify this production and offer the technology for the products of higher value, because the biodiesel subsidies will be reduced and eliminated eventually. This project is devoted to development of new technologies for producing higher value added products utilizing biotechnological synthesis from oils, fats and other renewable resources. Most promising samples will be selected and new manufacturing technologies will be introduced for production and evaluation of pilot scale experimental products: low flammability ageing-resistant biodegradable esters. Esters’ suitability for two applications will be investigated: 1) as plasticizers, used in manufacture of plastics, and 2) as base oils, used in manufacture of biolubricants. Plasticizers influence not only mechanical elasticity and durability of plastics, but also their odor, toxicity in contact with food, flammability due to exposure to fire, and consumer safety. Base oils are used for manufacturing of lubricants by dissolving functional additives in them. They dictate most lubricant properties, among those flammability and resistance to ageing. Both plasticizers and biolubricant base oils are made from organic esters, manufactured using chemical methods. Broad experience of lipase-based synthesis is accumulated in Lithuania and can be used in biotechnological synthesis of esters. The process conditions will be selected in such manner that esters, produced using glycols, would target the most important technical requirements, specified for polymer plasticizers and biolubricant base oils. Transesterification reactions using glycols will be carried out, along with lipase-based modification of alkyl chains. Acyl chain structure will be controlled by choosing selective lipases, interacting differently with specific fatty acids. Also the investigations will involve screening for selectivity towards fatty acids by carrying out the biotechnological synthesis in emulsions, replacing lipases with their producers and concurrently evaluating the influence of emulsifiers on lipase inactivation. Such selectivity would give an opportunity to control the flammability of obtained biodegradable esters. In addition to the studies of synthesis directions, experimental methodologies will be developed with the purpose of rapid testing of material’s suitability for plasticizers and biolubricant base oils. Not only their flammability and ageing will be evaluated, but also the volatility, hydrolysis and interaction between comparison samples with functional additives and system components. Most promising directions of biotechnological synthesis will be supplemented with appropriate processing stages, which would improve technical parameters of biodegradable esters. It will be attempted to evaluate the quality of experimental production from the pilot scale manufacture by providing its samples to potential users. Developed technology of biodegradable ester production will be optimized by reducing the manufacturing costs. Research conclusions will be made available to interested organizations, including polymer, biodiesel and lubricant manufacturers in Lithuania.

The general objective of ECHIM is to consolidate and expand the ECHI Indicator system towards a sustainable health monitoring system in Europe. The focus will be on collecting and disseminating comparable health data and information based on the ECHI shortlist. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with Member States, the European Commission, Eurostat, WHO, OECD and other international organisations with the aim of supporting the EU Health Strategy.

Specific objectives are to:
1. improve, document and maintain the ECHI Indicators,
2. develop guidelines and MS specific plans for ECHI shortlist indicators implementation at MS, regional and EU-level, as needed,
3. implement ECHI shortlist indicators in MSs and to achieve a good coverage,
4. maintain a network of national health indicator experts for ECHI Indicators and the needed data collection,
5. map, design and test the data flow between MSs and a central capacity for health monitoring,
6. present health data based on the ECHI shortlist, in connection with the EUPHIX system, and
7. produce the first joint analysis and report on data based on ECHI shortlist indicators.

The Isare project was carried out on the initiative of the Fédération Nationale des Observatoires Régionaux de Santé (FNORS) within the framework of the Health Monitoring Programme from European Commission.

The first phase, Isare I (1999-2001), made it possible to identify for each country, the most appropriate sub-national level ("health region") for the exchange of health indicators within the European Union and to assess the extent of data availability at those levels.

The second phase, Isare II (2002-2004), made it possible to test the feasibility of collecting regional data in each European country. A database demonstrator, built to illustrate the interest of this work is presented on this website.

The third phase, Isare III (2005-2007), made it possible to extend the Isare I and II project to the new countries of the European Union and to develop the data base.

For the first time in Latvia and Baltic Sea region comprehensive study of the influence of genetic factors on branch properties in different parts of stem will be carried out. This will provide the opportunity to significantly improve branching quality of fast growing trees, originating from seed orchard seeds, and in this way increase their suitability for needs of wood-processing industry. Similar improvements will be achieved also via detailed analysis of chemical and mechanical properties of wood as well as wood resistance to bio-degradation for clones, selected for seed orchard establishment. Use of seeds form the clones, selected in the project, would improve economical (faster growing and higher quality trees), social (increased employment in forestry sector) and ecological (increased CO2 sequestration, secured genetic diversity, improved adaptability) sustainability of forest management.

 ‘Nuh’un Gemisi’ Biodiversity Database (www.nuhungemisi.gov.tr) is a national public internet based biodiversity database which store Turkey’s biogeography species observation records. The database was put into use by 18th October 2007. National Bio-Diversity Database (Noah’s Ark) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry- Unit for Bio-Diversity Monitoring includes data on especially mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, some invertebrates, and state, availability, existence tendencies, fertility, wintering states, distributions and habitats of these species, plant species and distribution and borders, statutes and habitats of protected areas. Besides it is the database where some indicator types are represented with the purpose of monitoring bio-diversity of the country.
