Global Change Research is done with the objective of revealing to politics, industry and society the causes of the global pattern changes observed and the interactions involved, the extent to which the natural variability of global environmental phenomena is influenced by humankind, the extent to which changes can be forecasted, and the implications of these changes for social systems, in particular with regard to the aim of sustainable development. Because global environmental changes alter the current and future living conditions of people, there is an increasing need to shift this research towards more direct practical applications in order to help to provide answers to the questions raised by stakeholders and decision-makers. As a major contribution to this effort the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched the program GLOWA. GLOWA is embedded in the BMBF research framework program on research for sustainability.
GLOWA focuses on the problem of water availability. The medium and long-term availability of water is not only called into question by the continuous growth of the world population and in some areas by the excessive use of water resources, but is also increasingly influenced by global environmental changes. The aim of GLOWA is to develop simulation-tools and instruments which will allow to develop and to realize strategies for sustainable and future-oriented water management at regional level (river basins of approx. 100.000 km²), while taking into account global environmental changes and socioeconomic framework conditions.

The development of Europe´s urban centres is in many ways linked with the development of sustainable mobility options. Changes in behaviour, economic growth or recession and structure of the population are factors that have an immediate impact on transport and mobility patterns. Cities and regions are the place where the most complex challenges in transport and environment need to be solved.

Air quality has unquestionably adverse effects on human health. Because the dominant source of environmental impacts in most urban areas is traffic, local and regional authorities must find efficient and integrated solutions for their environmental and traffic problems to increase the quality of life for its citizens. The pressure on European cities and regions to implement the related EU regulations on air quality has led to a multitude of initiatives to develop a concrete sustainability perspective, which compromises between environmental quality and economic growth.

However, the absence of a common approach for the implementation of these regulations has led to isolated solutions which requires an initiative for a) developing better solutions, b) more efficient solutions, c) solutions which go beyond the obligations of the related EU directives, d) creating synergies and e) sharing the know-how, knowledge and experiences.

 CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment) Land Cover Program was initiated by European Union Commission. CORINE program was executed by European Commission from 1985 to 1990. During this period an environmental information system (CORINE System) was developed, terminology and methodology of this system was developed and accepted at European Union level. At Dobris Conference took place in 1991, program was requested to be applied to Middle and Eastern European Countries within the framework of European Union Grant Program and CORINE databases were completed in 13 countries with this support.

CORINE program is serving to four fundamental goals. These are:

-        To compile information on the state of the environment with regard to certain topics which have priority for all the Member States of the Community,

-        To coordinate the compilation of data and the organization of information within the Member States or at international level,

-        To ensure that information is consistent and that data are compatible,

-        To create “Land Usage” maps of our country in accordance with the criteria of European Environment Agency,

-        A further objective of the CORINE program is to bring together all the many attempts which have been made over the years at various levels (international, Community, national and regional) to obtain more information on the environment and the way it is changing.

The first phase of the Project was completed by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the second phase is under the responsibility of Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

In those societies with access to new media, concern continues to grow about the digital divide, between generations and between majority and minority social groups. In Portuguese society, this challenge presents some specific characteristics, marked by major cultural and educational differences and by the very different levels of digital literacy that distinguish the access and use of these media by adults and children. Children and youth younger than 18 year are ahead of adults in access and use, to the contrary of what happens in the majority of other European countries.

Portugal has passed from being a country of emigrants to becoming a country of immigrants, from its old colonies in Africa and Brazil in the last few decades, and more recently of immigrants from the countries of Eastern Europe. Access and use of the digital media also vary between children that have these media at home and in their room, and those who only get to use them at school and in public access where their use is limited and conditioned by circumstances.

This project thus intends to contribute to knowledge of the critical factors that facilitate or make more difficult the access and use of digital media by social groups that are considered socially disadvantaged. With this research it will be possible to bring together indicators that will contribute to helping digital content industries reach and include segments of the market that are not yet reached by their productions; that may help design public policies for digital inclusion that will be more effective and sustainable; that may strengthen local networks and agencies, including the production of contents by the groups that have been digitally excluded until now.

Energy poverty and social equity ("electricity for all") has high relevance on the post-apartheid political agenda. Local emissions from coal burning are an important health issue. Poor cooking devices form a severe threat due to the risk of large shack fires in informal settlement. Lately the issue of climate change has become more and more important - South Africa relying almost entirely on coal and being number 12 globally of the biggest CO2 emittants. It emits roughly 40% of the CO2 emissions of the African continent.
