GLOWA Global Change and the Hydrological Cycle (Globaler Wandel des Wasserkreislaufs)

Global Change Research is done with the objective of revealing to politics, industry and society the causes of the global pattern changes observed and the interactions involved, the extent to which the natural variability of global environmental phenomena is influenced by humankind, the extent to which changes can be forecasted, and the implications of these changes for social systems, in particular with regard to the aim of sustainable development. Because global environmental changes alter the current and future living conditions of people, there is an increasing need to shift this research towards more direct practical applications in order to help to provide answers to the questions raised by stakeholders and decision-makers. As a major contribution to this effort the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched the program GLOWA. GLOWA is embedded in the BMBF research framework program on research for sustainability.
GLOWA focuses on the problem of water availability. The medium and long-term availability of water is not only called into question by the continuous growth of the world population and in some areas by the excessive use of water resources, but is also increasingly influenced by global environmental changes. The aim of GLOWA is to develop simulation-tools and instruments which will allow to develop and to realize strategies for sustainable and future-oriented water management at regional level (river basins of approx. 100.000 km²), while taking into account global environmental changes and socioeconomic framework conditions.

MiKlip Decadal Climate Prediction (Mittelfristige Klimaprognosen (MiKlip))

The objective of the proposed funding measure is to develop a model system for forecasting the expected climate changes and its related extreme weather phenomena on a time scale of up to ten years with consideration of both, anthropogenically induced changes and natural climate variation. In technical terms, methods of seasonal forecasting must be combined with climate projection methods.

Apart from short-term forecasting on the one hand and long-term climate scenarios on the other hand, there is an increasing need for reliable climate information covering periods of several years up to even decades, because economic planning and also planning in politics and society usually refer to periods of around ten years. The model system that is to be developed within the framework of this funding measure is expected to contribute to the generation of reliable information on the climate development on these time horizons. The resulting climate forecasts will provide the basis for improving the capacity of industry and society to adapt to future climate variations. This funding measure is motivated by the needs of these end users.

Work on the new model system will entail great new challenges for the development of existing and new methods. This covers in particular the determination of the initial state, the description of the processes that are crucial for decadal climate prediction (e. g. modelling of the cryosphere or biosphere), the increase of spatial resolution through regionalization, the improvement or adaptation of statistical post-processing, and last but not least, the synthesis and validation of the entire model system.

The present approach widens the range of research activities and measures on how to deal with climate change as part of the High-Tech Strategy (HTS) for Climate Protection in the area "Knowledge - a basis for climate protection and adaptation".

Flood Risk from Extreme Events (FREE) is research to predict floods minutes to weeks and seasons to decades ahead.
The programme uses environmental science to investigate the physical processes involved in generating extreme events, so they can be better forecasted.
Climate change will probably bring more frequent and intense storms to the UK, in turn bringing more floods. At present, flood damage costs the UK about ú1bn each year. So it's essential we improve our ability to forecast, quantify and manage flood risks, and mitigate the effects of climate variability and change, if we're to maintain a sustainable economy. Sound environmental science must underpin our efforts.

Project Objective
The main aim of the project is to develop a comprehensive data flow system and indicator model for the purpose of sustainable collection and management of common data related to UNFCCC, UNCCD and UNCBD convention and to implement this model through a small scale GIS-supported pilot project.

Project Strategy
A unique feature of the Project is that DFS and national indicator model will be tested via a small-scale pilot project where the thematic issues converge, within an endangered coastal (karst) habitat. The impact of coastal area vegetation fires on destruction of biodiversity, the creation of conditions for different erosion processes, and on greenhouse gas balance. The pilot project will allow corrective actions necessary for establishing the full scale DFS at the national level.

Contrails and contrail cirrus are anthropogenic clouds. In the same way as natural clouds they have an impact on the earth radiation budget. If the ambient air is cold and moist enough, contrails are triggered by high flying aircrafts. According to the actual state of knowledge they account for 2 - 3% of the total anthropogenic warming. A contrail might be warming or cooling the earth-atmosphere system depending on the position of the sun, the surface properties and the state of the atmosphere. Only in limited areas temperature and water vapour content are favourable for the formation of contrails. Their life-time and spreading into cirrus decks are controlled by the atmospheric dynamics. Mainly at night, but also over bright surfaces or low clouds, contrails are warming. The basic idea of this project is to use weather forecast data in order to identify those regions which could lead to strongly warming contrails. This information will be included into the already existing routines for flight route optimisation to avoid those areas and flight levels if feasible. Within this project the feasibility and practicability of such an optimisation will be studied taking special care of the safety aspects and the cost effectiveness.

Understanding the mechanisms of glacial climate change represents a major scientific challenge. In spite of considerable progress in empirical palaeoclimatology achieved in recent decades, the nature of glacial climate variability remains debatable and no generally accepted theory of glacial cycles exists. The aim of MegaRun is to gain considerable progress in understanding past climate changes by using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity in conjunction with data analysis.

The major goal of the MegaRun project is to perform simulations of the temporal dynamics of climate and ice sheets during the whole Quaternary period (ca. last 2 million years) using orbital forcing as the only externally prescribed forcing. Changes in the atmospheric concentration of major greenhouse gases and dust loading and deposition will be interactively simulated by the new version of CLIMBER-2-ICE model which is currently under development.

Global Climate Change will increasingly have regional impacts on the water resources. More frequent floods, low flows and droughts, the retreat of glaciers and of snow cover in the Alps as well as changes of the natural and agrarian vegetation particularly in the Upper Danube watershed will be likely consequences of Climate Change. They will influence strongly the future development of the region. In order to facilitate the most effective planning of future investments for decades (e.g. in energy management, farming, tourism, industry), an intensive examination of the regional consequences of Climate Change is necessary.

GLOWA-Danube is a research and development program focusing on the comprehensive analysis of the future of water resources of the Upper Danube. In GLOWA-Danube the impact of Climate Change of a broad range of sectors is investigated. Furthermore the project identifies and simulates strategies for adaptation to and mitigation of the consequences of Climate Change and tests their effectiveness. In GLOWA-Danube a team of researchers from different natural and socio-economic science disciplines work closely together in an interdisciplinary, university-based competence network since 2001.

Global climate warming is clearly expressed in Estonia during the last decades. Mean surface air temperature has significantly increased, especially in winter and spring. Duration of snow cover and sea ice has remarkable decreased, the start of plant phenological phases in spring has shifted earlier by ca two weeks. Cyclonic activity has intensified and storminess has increased in winter season. Changes in precipitation regime are more unclear and they have been less studied. Extreme precipitations and droughts are one of the main climate risks in Estonia. The objective of this project proposal is to study this problem in more details.

For the first time in Latvia and Baltic Sea region comprehensive study of the influence of genetic factors on branch properties in different parts of stem will be carried out. This will provide the opportunity to significantly improve branching quality of fast growing trees, originating from seed orchard seeds, and in this way increase their suitability for needs of wood-processing industry. Similar improvements will be achieved also via detailed analysis of chemical and mechanical properties of wood as well as wood resistance to bio-degradation for clones, selected for seed orchard establishment. Use of seeds form the clones, selected in the project, would improve economical (faster growing and higher quality trees), social (increased employment in forestry sector) and ecological (increased CO2 sequestration, secured genetic diversity, improved adaptability) sustainability of forest management.

Global climate change is at the heart of public debate. More than ever, it is necessary to understand the essential mechanisms which will control the climate evolution from global to regional scales, and in particular the links between the anthropic emissions, the dynamics of continental surfaces, the land use and the climate.
The objective of CICLE is to push back the frontiers of climatic simulation, by allowing a qualitative and quantitative improvement of the time and space scales solved by the climate models, as well as an increased complexity of modelled systems. We aim to use in an optimal way the climate models on the supercomputers in France (IDRIS, CCRT, Weather-France...) and abroad (Earth Simulator in Yokohama, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, DKRZ with Hamburg, ECMWF...).
