Aufgaben und Ziele

Im Rahmen der Umweltprobenbank werden systematisch Umweltproben aus repräsentativen Ökosystemen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland gewonnen, charakterisiert und bei Temperaturen unter minus 150° C so gelagert, dass sich die chemische Zusammensetzung ihrer Inhaltsstoffe über Jahrzehnte nicht verändert.

Zur Gewährleistung des hohen wissenschaftlichen Anspruchs an die Umweltprobenbank wurden während der Aufbauphase vorrangig folgende Aufgaben bearbeitet:

 

Die Belegproben der Umweltprobenbank sollen insbesondere für folgende Aufgaben genutzt werden:

  • Kontinuierliche Überwachung der Konzentration gegenwärtig bereits bekannter Schadstoffe durch systematische Charakterisierung (Monitoring) der gewonnenen Proben vor ihrer Archivierung;
  • Trendaussagen über lokale, regionale und globale Entwicklungen der Schadstoffbelastungen auf der Grundlage authentischen Materials aus der Vergangenheit (Trend- und ökotoxikologische Aussagen);
  • Bestimmung der Konzentration von Stoffen, die zur Zeit der Einlagerung (Sicherung) noch nicht als Schadstoffe erkannt waren oder nicht mit ausreichender Genauigkeit analysiert werden konnten (retrospektives Monitoring);
  • Überprüfung früher ermittelter Monitoring-Ergebnisse;
  • Anwendung standardisierter Methodenbeschreibungen (Standardarbeitsanweisungen) für Probentransport, -aufarbeitung, -charakterisierung und -lagerung als notwendige Voraussetzung zur Gewinnung vergleichbarer Ergebnisse;
  • Verwendung als Referenzproben zur Dokumentation der analytischen Leistungsverbesserung.

The primary research goal of this IRTG is the enhancement of scientific and information visualization techniques applied to large and unstructured data sets. Every visualization task is based on application data. For providing these data, we integrate applications from the domain "Geospatial Planning, Modeling, and Engineering", which produce these huge amounts of unstructured data that are of interest for the planned visualization tasks. This integration is necessary to allow a deeper understanding of the provided data due to the sharing of knowledge through the projects.
Up to now, visualization of large and structured or small and unstructured data sets is the state of the art. Large and unstructured data sets are still not very well understood, especially with respect to visualization. In order to address these questions, we define a set of projects aiming at solving these problems. In detail, we are handling visualization problems, with respect to modeling, feature detection, and comparison tasks. For doing this, both the extension of existing techniques and the development of new ones are intended.
In the application areas there is an increasing need to handle huge amounts of unstructured data. For example, nowadays environmental monitoring systems are capable of measuring data at a very high resolution and in a large number of frequency bands. On the other hand, in scaled-down earthquake laboratory experiments within a centrifuge improved sensor technology permits the measurement of an increased number of parameters at higher sampling rates. Finally, earthquake simulations produce more and more data because of more elaborate simulation techniques. All these improvements in measurement technology lead to large, high-dimensional data sets. Visualizing these data is very useful to get new insights into the problems involved.

In the application areas huge amounts of data are produced either by data from field measurements like environmental observation stations, from experiments and from simulation. The data is then visualized based on improved or newly developed visualization techniques like volume modeling, feature detection and visualization, etc.
The research objectives described above are backed by parallel analyses conducted in our partner country, the U.S. In [1] the needs for further research in the area of visualization as seen by the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) are described.

 CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment) Land Cover Program was initiated by European Union Commission. CORINE program was executed by European Commission from 1985 to 1990. During this period an environmental information system (CORINE System) was developed, terminology and methodology of this system was developed and accepted at European Union level. At Dobris Conference took place in 1991, program was requested to be applied to Middle and Eastern European Countries within the framework of European Union Grant Program and CORINE databases were completed in 13 countries with this support.

CORINE program is serving to four fundamental goals. These are:

-        To compile information on the state of the environment with regard to certain topics which have priority for all the Member States of the Community,

-        To coordinate the compilation of data and the organization of information within the Member States or at international level,

-        To ensure that information is consistent and that data are compatible,

-        To create “Land Usage” maps of our country in accordance with the criteria of European Environment Agency,

-        A further objective of the CORINE program is to bring together all the many attempts which have been made over the years at various levels (international, Community, national and regional) to obtain more information on the environment and the way it is changing.

The first phase of the Project was completed by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the second phase is under the responsibility of Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

Contrails and contrail cirrus are anthropogenic clouds. In the same way as natural clouds they have an impact on the earth radiation budget. If the ambient air is cold and moist enough, contrails are triggered by high flying aircrafts. According to the actual state of knowledge they account for 2 - 3% of the total anthropogenic warming. A contrail might be warming or cooling the earth-atmosphere system depending on the position of the sun, the surface properties and the state of the atmosphere. Only in limited areas temperature and water vapour content are favourable for the formation of contrails. Their life-time and spreading into cirrus decks are controlled by the atmospheric dynamics. Mainly at night, but also over bright surfaces or low clouds, contrails are warming. The basic idea of this project is to use weather forecast data in order to identify those regions which could lead to strongly warming contrails. This information will be included into the already existing routines for flight route optimisation to avoid those areas and flight levels if feasible. Within this project the feasibility and practicability of such an optimisation will be studied taking special care of the safety aspects and the cost effectiveness.

Kondensstreifen und die daraus entstehenden Zirren greifen als anthropogene Wolken in den Strahlungshaushalt der Atmosphäre ein. Sie können von hochfliegenden Flugzeugen ausgelöst werden, sobald die Umgebungsluft kalt und feucht genug ist. Nach dem derzeitigen Wissensstand tragen sie mit ca. 2 bis 3 Prozent zum gesamten anthropogenen Treibhauseffekt bei. Ob ein Kondensstreifen erwärmend oder abkühlend wirkt, hängt im Einzelfall vom Sonnenstand, Ort und Zustand der Atmosphäre ab. Die Bedingungen zur Entstehung von Kondensstreifen sind nur in begrenzten Gebieten gegeben, ihre Ausbreitung und Lebensdauer wird durch die Dynamik der Atmosphäre bestimmt. Erwärmend wirken Kondensstreifen vor allem nachts, aber auch über hellem Untergrund und über niedrigen Wolken. Die grundlegende Idee dieses Vorhabens ist es, schon bei der Optimierung von Flugrouten kondensstreifenträchtige Gebiete dann zu vermeiden, wenn eine starke, erwärmende Strahlungswirkung zu erwarten ist, um so die Klimawirkung des Luftverkehrs zu reduzieren. Dazu wird die Strahlungswirkung potenzieller Kondensstreifen auf der Datengrundlage von Wettervorhersagemodellen abgeschätzt und als zusätzliches Kriterium in die Flugplanung eingeführt. In diesem Verbundprojekt wird die Durchführbarkeit dieser Optimierung unter Berücksichtigung der Sicherheitsaspekte, der Wirtschaftlichkeit und des Nutzens für das globale Klima bewertet.

ES-WAMAR is a large-scale European demonstration Project on handling swine waste promoted by SODEMASA, the Society for Environmental Development in Aragon, and approved by the European Union within the framework of the Life-Environmental Programme.

The Project will be conducted in three different areas, with the same initial problems, such is the large amount of pig waste produced, with several management systems being proposed in keeping with the specific characteristics of each area.

As alternative to the management of swine waste, the valorisation of the livestock waste is prioritized as nutrients recycling in farmlands, and later, when it does not exist enough farmland area available, swine waste is treated biologically.

The Isare project was carried out on the initiative of the Fédération Nationale des Observatoires Régionaux de Santé (FNORS) within the framework of the Health Monitoring Programme from European Commission.

The first phase, Isare I (1999-2001), made it possible to identify for each country, the most appropriate sub-national level ("health region") for the exchange of health indicators within the European Union and to assess the extent of data availability at those levels.

The second phase, Isare II (2002-2004), made it possible to test the feasibility of collecting regional data in each European country. A database demonstrator, built to illustrate the interest of this work is presented on this website.

The third phase, Isare III (2005-2007), made it possible to extend the Isare I and II project to the new countries of the European Union and to develop the data base.

Global Climate Change will increasingly have regional impacts on the water resources. More frequent floods, low flows and droughts, the retreat of glaciers and of snow cover in the Alps as well as changes of the natural and agrarian vegetation particularly in the Upper Danube watershed will be likely consequences of Climate Change. They will influence strongly the future development of the region. In order to facilitate the most effective planning of future investments for decades (e.g. in energy management, farming, tourism, industry), an intensive examination of the regional consequences of Climate Change is necessary.

GLOWA-Danube is a research and development program focusing on the comprehensive analysis of the future of water resources of the Upper Danube. In GLOWA-Danube the impact of Climate Change of a broad range of sectors is investigated. Furthermore the project identifies and simulates strategies for adaptation to and mitigation of the consequences of Climate Change and tests their effectiveness. In GLOWA-Danube a team of researchers from different natural and socio-economic science disciplines work closely together in an interdisciplinary, university-based competence network since 2001.
