Utilisation of computer models and digital data, and establishing mechanisms assuring their quality are essential for research at PIK. Concerning this matter, the group aims in close cooperation with the other Research Domains and PIK-IT at the development of concepts and the implementation of computational methods.
The following interrelated focal points are addressed by the group. They are of significant and continuous relevance to sustain PIK’s research process.
Integrated data utilisation aims at integrated and flexible utilisation of available, yet considerably heterogeneous data. General and extensible data frameworks are designed and developed that provide standardised and integrated access to data resources and data transformation and processing functionality.
Data quality analysis is approached by systematic quality investigations. The base idea is to generally systemise quality measures, adapt them to specific disciplines and provide a set of strongly linked statistical and visualisation methods.
Analysis of model sensitivity and uncertainty to fluctuations in a model’s input space is a key technique for model evaluation and quality assurance. Methods to generate efficient deterministic and probabilistic experimentation plans and to analyse multi-run experiments are identified and implemented.
Sustainability and assurance of model quality by software engineering addresses source code quality maintenance, testing and debugging in a transdisciplinary research environment by modern software engineering methods like code analysis, refactoring and automatic documentation for large legacy model codes.
A cross-cutting focus is the adaptation and development of visualisation methods including exploration methods for large-volume and multivariate datasets and comparative approaches for scenario / experiment analyses.
The overall approach is to bridge the gap between domain experts and/or decision makers and available information technologies. Problem analysis is carried out in close co-operation with domain experts to systematically identify requirements and match them with IT methods and software solutions. State-of-the-art technologies, concepts and methods are integrated / provided / adapted / enhanced for research processes. New concepts and methods are developed together with external research partners to meet PIK-specific requirements. The group builds on its expertise in a number of common base technologies, including simulation, data bases / warehouses, compute and storage grid, parallelisation, human-computer interaction, visual and statistical data analysis, software engineering and code analysis.

The agriculture is focussed on the production of herbal and animal products with high quality and food safety. Limited natural resources, demands towards environment friendly and transparent grown products, and also the compliance with the competitiveness of the farms drive into more precision in agriculture. Steuerung präziser Düngerdosierung unter Einsatz des PendelsensorsThis increased precision can be performed only, if sufficiently relevant soil, crop and animal parameters are available. Only by use of suitable sensors these parameters can be acquired in the needed density and quantity. The efficient preparing and use of the data are further challenges.
The research program contains the development, modifying, and exemplary use of sensors in horticultural and agricultural primary production. Based on the current level of knowledge - on the field of sensor technology (mainly in the high-tech-sector) suitable solution approaches for sensors are analysed and modified for agricultural purposes. The comprehensive test and assessment of new sensor technologies should be targeted on a high quality of research results.
Das Ziel landwirtschaftlicher Produktion besteht im Erzeugen von pflanzlichen und tierischen Produkten mit hoher Qualität und Nahrungsmittelsicherheit. Begrenzte natürliche Ressourcen, die Forderung nach umweltschonend und transparent erzeugten Produkten sowie die gleichzeitig notwendige Sicherung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Landwirtschaftsbetriebe zwingen zu mehr Präzision in landwirtschaftlichen Produktionsverfahren.Diese Präzisionssteigerung ist nur erreichbar, wenn ausreichend und relevante Boden-, Pflanzen und Tierparameter zur Verfügung stehen. Nur durch den Einsatz geeigneter Sensoren können diese Parameter in ausreichender Dichte und Qualität gewonnen werden. Eine weitere Herausforderung besteht darin, die dabei anfallenden Datenmengen effektiv aufzubereiten und zu nutzen.
Das Forschungsprogramm beinhaltet die Entwicklung, Anpassung und beispielhafte Anwendung von Sensoren in der gärtnerischen und landwirtschaftlichen Primärproduktion. Auf der Grundlage der Kenntnis des neuesten Entwicklungsstandes - insbesondere des High-Tech- Bereichs- auf dem Sektor der Sensortechnik sollen geeignete Lösungsansätze analysiert und für den Agrarbereich angepasst und weiterentwickelt werden. Die umfassende Erprobung und Bewertung der neu entwickelten Sensortechnik sollte darauf gerichtet sein, ein hohes Maß an Aussagesicherheit zu gewährleisten.

For the first time in Latvia and Baltic Sea region comprehensive study of the influence of genetic factors on branch properties in different parts of stem will be carried out. This will provide the opportunity to significantly improve branching quality of fast growing trees, originating from seed orchard seeds, and in this way increase their suitability for needs of wood-processing industry. Similar improvements will be achieved also via detailed analysis of chemical and mechanical properties of wood as well as wood resistance to bio-degradation for clones, selected for seed orchard establishment. Use of seeds form the clones, selected in the project, would improve economical (faster growing and higher quality trees), social (increased employment in forestry sector) and ecological (increased CO2 sequestration, secured genetic diversity, improved adaptability) sustainability of forest management.

Create a new interdisciplinary scientific research group to study atomic and technological and physical processes of continuous media in the sphere of mathematical modeling. The group will include the Latvian University, Faculty of Physics and Mathematical Physics and Mathematics departments young scientists, PhD students and students of the total number of not less than 30, contributing to faster growth and study quality, combining the current group of young researchers in the individual researchers.

“Reti Digital Divide” is developed in the framework of broadband networks for Public Administrations in Emilia-Romagna. It aims at assuring a minimum level of communication in all regional areas, including the so-called areas at “market failure”. Activities concern in particular mountainous zones of Appennini as well as some areas of low plane, where the problem of digital divide is stressed by lacking of infrastructures. The goal is to offer to underprivileged territories equal technologial opportunities for socio-economic development.
